Closeburn cottage is now called Trigony house hotel, on
a map from 1861 the building was called Closeburn Cottage and sometime between
then and 1881 the building name was changed to Trigony cottage. More research is
being done to find out when it changed and why it changed to Trigony, the
building was also used at some point for a shooting lodge for Closeburn Castle.
There are 2 main buildings the hotel building being the large building in the
picture, it appears that only the Tudor building on the left and a small part of the
hotel building are original the rest being added in 1938.
On the 1851 census a man named John Hunter and his niece and a servant stayed in
the building. In 1861 John and his niece still resided in the house along with
Catherine's husband Thomas Kirkpatrick and his nephew Robert the house was still
called Closeburn Cottage. In 1871 The cottage was uninhabited and was under the
name of Trigony Cottage. In the 1881 census Agnes Bell Wife of Thomas Bell,
Minister of the free church of Leswalt, and three of her daughters Eleanor,
Isabella and Madeline stayed in the building with two servants
This was also the residence of Miss Frances Grace Shakerley who died at the grand age of 106 on February 1st 1938 it was after this time when additions were made to the building
